The Importance of Liability Insurance for Contractors
Published August 25th, 2017

If you’re an independent contractor, it is important that you are fully  insured against any liability . You may think that your chances of getting sued are unlikely, as you always provide quality work and you know your customers personally. However, something can always go wrong, and mistakes always happen. In addition, you may end up being named in a lawsuit where you are not the main guilty party; lawyers often name any contractors involved in a project in order to get the most for their client.

There are many things you’ll need to be prepared for. If you accidentally cause damage to a customer, you need to be protected from any liability. Every industry has different risks.

If you deal in physical and mechanical work, something you work on can get damaged or injure a person. For example, if you are a roofer, you need to be protected if a roof or the materials you use to work on a roof (such as hot tar) damages someone. If you are a security guard, you need to be covered in case of an assault charge. Every industry is different, and even contractors such as accountants can be held liable for financial damages.

If you sell food or drink, you need to be protected against any claims that your food caused someone to fall ill. This is especially important if you deal with alcohol.

You also need to be insured so that you are covered in case anything happens to you. If you are injured or one of your workers that you hire is injured, you need insurance for that. If you need to cease operations for a while, you want to be able to cover that.

You also need to be protected if someone sues for advertising claims you made. This can be a competitor or someone alleging false advertising.
